Welcome to the next instalment of the Foodie Files! Today I’m chatting to Sam, also known as The Annoyed Thyroid! I really love Sam’s blog, it’s an awesome mix of delicious recipes, fascinating interviews and all kinds of other interesting topics. She’s also one of the hosts of the weekly Ultimate Rabbit Hole linkup which I love – I find such great posts there every single week!
If you’re not already following Sam’s blog I highly recommend you start – I have no doubt you’ll love it! So, without further ado, here’s Sam!
Do you have a philosophy towards food?
I like good food and food that’s good for me. Between us, my husband and I have had two touches of cancer and one stroke between us, and I’d be lying if I said it hadn’t had a huge impact on the food we eat, at least in so far as we prefer to make as much of what we eat from scratch (within reason) and to eat meatless meals most of the time. However, we both have mouthfuls of sweet teeth and I’m addicted to baking which balances things out. Put it this way, we’re not going to quit sugar anytime soon!
What’s your favourite food memory?
I think it would be making Bread Pudding with my nana. She made the best Bread Pudding. Have you ever had it? It’s can be served as a cake or a pudding and it must not be confused with it’s cooking cousin, the Bread and Butter Pudding. I can’t remember what I did yesterday, but I can still remember the sight and the smell of bread pudding cooking in nana’s kitchen. I tried to create it on the blog here – I think nana would be proud!
Do you have a go-to food of choice?
Curries. If I could eat curry every day, I would. My friend Dharish makes the best curries, and she’s shared some of her (now not so) secret recipes on the blog. They’re some of my favourites. Simple, easy and delicious.
What’s your favourite meal of the day?
That’s tricky because I love all my meals, but I think I’d have to say breakfast because it’s so versatile… porridge, green smoothies, overnight oats, avocado on toast, eggs and beans and pancakes! I never met a breakfast I didn’t like.
What’s the strangest food you’re ever eaten (and would you eat it again?!)
I once ate snails and tripe (not in the same meal, thank goodness) on a French Exchange when I was a teenager. Once was quite enough. No, never again.
If you were showing a visitor around town for a weekend where would be your must-eat destinations?
Well, we’d definitely go for breakfast with a view at The Boathouse, a doughnut from Doughnut Time for elevenses, dumplings at New Shanghai for lunch, high tea at The Gunners Barracks and for dinner, we’d give our credit card a workout and swoon over the harbour views at Cafe Sydney. Dress code for the weekend would be stretchy pants, obviously.

How cute is that picture of Sam and her nan! I have to admit, I managed to avoid the whole tripe eating thing when I went on exchange to France when I was 16 because thankfully the French word for tripe was remarkably similar to the English one, so I weaselled my way out of that meal!
