With winter almost upon us it’s extra important to keep your skin moisturised to counter the drying heaters and cold winds that are unavoidable at this time of year. Brown sugar scrubs are an excellent way to achieve this, and they also happen to be super simple to make yourself with some household staples!
I like to mix it up and try different scents so today I thought I would share three of my favourite brown sugar scrubs with you. They make the perfect gift as well, so keep them in mind for Mother’s Day!
Honey Brown Sugar Scrub
This scrub is particularly great for using on your face, I like to apply it as a mask and then exfoliate with it before removing. It’s gentle but nourishing, and the addition of the honey means it has added anti-bacterial properties, making it particularly good for acne-prone skin. It’s best to use raw honey from your local market or health food store as the mass-produced honey tends to be pasteurised and therefore loses some of those benefits. So, what’s in it?
- Brown Sugar
- Honey
- Almond Oil (or any other oil you have on hand)
Spoon brown sugar into your jar to three-quarter fill it, then add a tablespoon of honey and a tablespoon of almond oil and stir to combine. Add more of both the honey and oil until you reach the consistency you’re after. That’s it!
Vanilla Brown Sugar Scrub
I wish you could smell this one through the computer screen! The vanilla really does smell delicious and it basically smells like you’re making dessert – it really is good enough to eat! I tend to use this one as more of a whole-body scrub, it not only smells amazing but leaves your skin feeling soft and moisturised.
- Brown sugar
- Coconut oil (or oil of your choice)
- Vanilla essence
- Vitamin E oil
Combine brown sugar and coconut oil (roughly 1 cup of sugar to 1/4 cup of oil) then add 2tsp of vanilla essence and 1/2tsp of Vitamin E oil and stir to combine. Spoon into your jar and enjoy using it!
Coffee Brown Sugar Scrub
This scrub is particularly excellent to use first thing in the morning as it really will perk you up thanks to the addition of the coffee grounds. I save the coffee grounds that I use in my plunger and dry them out by spreading them on some baking paper for a day or two then save them up for my next batch of this brown sugar scrub. Doubly thrifty!
- Coffee grounds
- Brown sugar
- Coconut oil
This one calls for equal parts coffee grounds & brown sugar and then about half as much coconut oil (in liquid form), then it’s as simple as stirring them together and popping them in a jar. A real morning pick-me-up!
